5 August or 19 August 2017 – 10:00-16:00
*** This event is now fully booked ***
Interested in raising your own queens from selected stocks? The Ochils Breeding Group are organising one-day practical workshops for beekeepers on raising and mating their own queens.
The three tutors, John Durkacz, Jeff Baxter and Gavin Ramsay, have a wealth of experience in this area and are active in the Scottish Native Honey Bee Society.
The course will run at the Willowgate Activity Centre near Perth and just off the M90.
The day will include hands-on tuition of grafting, cell raising, drone production, mating nuclei, queen handling and queen introduction via the nucleus method. A focus will be made on methods suitable for the small-scale beekeeper. The fee of £40 will include lunch and course documents. We also aim to produce Apis mellifera mellifera virgin queens and queen cells from Colonsay stocks for participants to take away on the day if they wish, to mate in their own apiaries, for a donation to SNHBS. This offer is subject to successful grafting in advance of the workshops. Attendees will be sent information in advance on looking after these virgin queens and queen cells.
