Interested in raising your own queens from selected stocks? The Ochils Breeding Group are organising one-day practical workshops for beekeepers on raising and mating their own queens building on the highly successful 2017 workshops.
The Ochils Breeding Group comprises John Durkacz, Jeff Baxter and family (Cloverlea Apiaries) and Gavin Ramsay (Tay Bees and Honey). They have a wealth of experience in queen rearing and bee breeding, are active beekeeping educators and are founder members of the Scottish Native Honey Bee Society.
The course will run at the Cloverlea Apiaries site near Path of Condie and Glenfarg in the Ochil Hills.
The day will include hands-on tuition of grafting, cell raising, drone production, mating nuclei, queen handling and queen introduction via the nucleus method. There will also be indoor sessions to learn theoretical aspects of queen rearing and understand the factors required to make it work well. The fee of £65 will include lunch and course documents.
